Giants Baseball Continue Conference Push with Win Over Porterville
VISALIA, Calif. – College of the Sequoias put together a strong all-around performance Thursday afternoon, defeating Porterville 6-2 at COS Baseball Field, and now stands alone in second place in the Central Valley Conference standings.
After two scoreless innings, the Giants broke through in the third with a three-run frame. Walker Selley came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Caleb Catalano (San Francisco), and Jaxon Griffiths (Redwood HS) followed with an RBI single. Griffiths later came home on a wild pitch to cap the inning and give COS a 3-0 lead.
College of the Sequoias added to its advantage in the fourth. Aiden Medina (Hoover HS) scored on a wild pitch before Joshua Barajas (Central East HS) reached on an error that brought in Selley, extending the lead to 5-0.
The Giants continued to apply pressure and added an insurance run in the eighth when Jason Lopez (Fowler HS) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Griffiths to make it 6-0.
On the mound, Jerod Smith (Fowler HS) delivered one of his best outings of the season, tossing seven shutout innings while allowing just three hits and striking out nine. Carson Hindmarsh followed with a clean eighth, and Chance Jasso (Redwood HS) closed it out in the ninth to secure the save.
Offensively, Selley and Griffiths each collected two hits to lead the way, while COS capitalized on Porterville's three errors and timely execution to build its lead.
"We played a really solid game from start to finish," Head Coach Scott Laird said. "Smith was outstanding on the mound, and we did a great job creating pressure offensively. That's the type of baseball that wins games in conference."
