Conference Title, Playoff Berth at Stake as Giants Football Hosts Modesto in Home Finale
No. 14 College of the Sequoias (7-2, 3-1) returns home as they host No. 12 Modesto Junior College (7-2, 4-0) this Saturday at 1 p.m., with a Central Valley Conference championship and postseason berth on the line. Saturday's game carries major implications, with the winner earning the conference title and a spot in the 3C2A state playoffs.
The Giants are looking to bounce back after a narrow 23-21 road loss at Fresno City. Modesto enters the contest after a 57-8 win over Monterey Peninsula, backed by an offense that averages over 32 points per game. The Pirates' attack will test a COS defense that has allowed just under 22 points per game (top-20 in the state) and top 10 in the state with 15 interceptions on the season.
The Giants will lean on quarterback Payton Faker, who ranks among the state's passing leaders with 2,870 yards and 24 touchdowns. He has plenty of weapons, including receivers Marshel Sanders and Gage Armbruster, who have combined for over 1,200 receiving yards and 9 scores. Running back Jahkylle Smith has been effective both on the ground and through the air, adding another dimension to the offense.
Saturday's game will also serve as Sophomore Day and marks the final home contest of the regular season. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Giants as they look to punch their ticket to the postseason and clinch the conference title. General admission is $10, faculty & seniors (65+) are $5, and children under 9 are admitted free. Gates open at noon at Sequoias Stadium.
