COS Women’s Basketball Rolls to 80-47 Road Win at Reedley
REEDLEY, Calif. – College of the Sequoias women's basketball team used a huge defensive start and a balanced scoring effort to take down Reedley College 80-47 on Wednesday, remaining unbeaten in Central Valley Conference play.
The Giants opened the game with an 18-4 first quarter and never looked back. They took a 35-22 lead into halftime, then extended the margin with 20 points in the third quarter and a 25-point fourth to close out the contest.
Freshman Nyla Anderson (Austin) led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, adding 4 rebounds and 3 assists in a well-rounded performance. Sophomore Kalysa Phanhsavang (McNair HS) packed the stat sheet with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals, while freshman Izabel Mendez (Caruthers HS) chipped in 11 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals of her own.
COS also saw contributions off the bench, including 9 points from freshman Vivian Moore (Central East HS), 8 points from sophomore Olivia Gill (Pioneer HS), and 8 points from sophomore Gabby Brooks (Las Vegas). The team shot 45.6% from the field and knocked down 10 three-pointers, assisting on 21 of their 31 made baskets.
The Giants controlled the boards with a 49-31 rebounding advantage and forced 14 turnovers with their pressure defense.
Head Coach Tyler Newton praised his team's energy and execution, "I thought we were locked in from the jump. We challenged the group to play a full game, and they responded. Our energy, especially on the defensive end and from our bench, really carried us—and the way we shared the ball was fun to watch."
With the win, COS improves to 9-9 overall and 2-0 in the CVC, heading into a key stretch of matchups this week.
Next Up
College of the Sequoias travels to Lemoore College (13-5, 2-0) on Wednesday, January 17, with the Men's at 5:00 PM and Women's at 7:00 PM. They will return home to host Fresno City College (11-6, 1-0) on Saturday, January 21 at 5:00 PM inside Porter Field House. That game will be the second half of a conference doubleheader, with the men's game tipping off at 3:00 PM. Both Lemoore and Fresno City sit near the top of the CVC standings and will provide strong tests as the Giants look to stay perfect in league play.
