COS Men Defeat Porterville, Face Tough Modesto Squad
VISALIA, Calif. – The College of the Sequoias men's tennis team earned a strong conference victory at home against Porterville College before traveling to Modesto Junior College the following day for a challenging road matchup.
The Giants defeated Porterville 8-1 on March 3 before falling to Modesto 9-0 on March 4.
COS 8 - Porterville 1 (March 3)
COS opened the match by sweeping all three doubles courts.
At No. 1 doubles, Seth Herrera (Mt. Whitney HS) and Tomas Mendez (Mt. Whitney HS) used consistent first serves and well-timed lobs to keep their opponents off balance in an 8-3 victory.
"Our coaches told the team that Porterville likes to play aggressive doubles," Herrera said. "Our players stayed disciplined and adjusted well."
The teams of Robert Dan (El Diamante HS) with Kenneth Catalan (Lemoore HS) and Christopher Rosales (Mt. Whitney HS) with Brody Nordyke (Tulare Western HS) also earned doubles wins to give the Giants an early 3-0 lead.
In singles play, COS continued to build on that momentum. Dan secured a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, while Mendez added another point with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles.
Ethan Treadaway (El Diamante HS) and Rosales also posted strong wins.
At No. 6 singles, Ismael Navarro (Tulare Western HS) controlled the match with consistent forehand groundstrokes that forced his opponent into errors, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Modesto 9 - COS 0 (March 4)
The following day, the Giants traveled to Modesto Junior College and faced a strong Pirates lineup.
At No. 2 doubles, Catalan and Rosales played a competitive match but fell just short 6-8.
Several COS players battled through competitive singles matches. Rosales pushed his opponent to a third-set tiebreak before falling 4-6, 6-4, (10-4). Navarro also played a close match at No. 6 singles but lost 7-6, 6-4.
Despite the results, the Giants competed hard throughout the afternoon against one of the conference's strongest teams.
