COS Track & Field Delivers Top Finishes at West Coast Relays
College of the Sequoias track and field faced a highly competitive field featuring NCAA Division I, Division II, and California Community College programs. The Giants delivered multiple top finishes and personal-best performances across the meet, continuing to build momentum against high-level competition.
Women Lead Strong Performances
The COS women were led by strong efforts in the hurdles, distance, and jumps.
Aavian Covington (Central HS) led the sprint-hurdle group with a 12th-place finish in the 100m hurdles, clocking a personal-best 15.12.
In distance events, Jizelle Loza (Redwood HS) recorded a sixth-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase (13:14.39), while Xitlallic Fieros (El Diamante HS) added a ninth-place finish (16:04.46), giving COS two top-10 finishers in the event.
In the sprints, Katalina Castillo (Corcoran HS) placed 20th in the 100 meters (12.49), followed closely by Daoni Hodge Redd (Nevada) in 21st (12.56), while Sadie Carpenter (Immanuel HS) finished 29th with a personal-best 12.84.
In the 400 meters, Ava Rangel (Sanger HS) placed 16th overall with a personal-best 1:01.57, while Abigal Cutshall (Corcoran HS) followed in 21st (1:05.34). The 100 meters saw Katalina Castillo and Daoni Hodge Redd finish 20th (12.49) and 21st (12.56) respectively.
In the field, Vivian Moore (Central HS) highlighted the jumps with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (11.74m), while Sadie Carpenter placed seventh (11.56m) and Ashlyn Reed (Tulare Western HS) finished eighth (11.43m), giving COS three top-10 finishers. Reed also placed ninth in the long jump (5.44m), while Moore finished 17th (5.08m) and Carpenter finished 20th (4.49m).
The 4x100-meter relay team of Reed, Hodge Redd, Allyson Daniel (Sanger HS), and Castillo placed fifth overall in 48.94.
Taylor McElree (Redwood HS) placed 11th in the discus with a mark of 32.41m and finished 18th in the hammer throw at 33.21m.
Men Deliver Strong Results
The COS men were led by strong sprint and hurdle performances, along with contributions in the jumps and throws.
Tevin Howerton placed sixth in the 100 meters with a time of 10.66 and added a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters (21.28). Chase Dexter and Mattis Aguilar followed with times of 11.01 and 11.02, placing 27th and 28th, respectively, in the 100 meters. Jo'siah Moon placed 15th in the 400 meters and added a 21st-place finish in the 200 meters, clocking 22.13.
In the hurdles, Angel Sanchez (Dinuba HS) placed ninth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.49, while Richard Crakes followed in 12th at 15.63. In the 400m hurdles, Crakes led the way with a fifth-place finish in a personal-best 53.76, and Sanchez added a 13th-place finish with a personal-best 57.08.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Treshawn Rimmer, Chase Dexter, Jo'siah Moon, and Howerton placed fourth overall in 41.08.
In the field events, John Applewhite (Mt. Whitney HS) led the way with a fifth-place finish in the triple jump (13.58m), while Nathan Herrera (Tulare Western HS) placed ninth (12.94m). Tyrik Jackson (Hanford West HS) added a ninth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.80m.
Jaime Benavides (Tulare Western HS) cleared 4.13m to place ninth in the pole vault. Mattis Aguilar finished 10th in the high jump (1.85m), followed by Cristobal Vasquez (Tulare Western HS) in 14th (1.80m).
Ruben Rubio-Carbajal led the throwers with a ninth-place finish in the shot put (13.93m). He also placed 11th in the discus (41.49m) and recorded a personal-best 39.52m to finish 18th in the hammer throw. Carlos Renteria (Orosi HS) added a 25th-place finish in the discus (33.77m) and placed 22nd in the hammer throw (24.65m).
Upcoming Meets for the Giants
College of the Sequoias will continue its season this week with competition at two meets. The Giants will be at the Stanford Invitational and at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, hosted by San Francisco State University, on Friday, April 3 to Saturday, April 4. Both meets provide strong opportunities for Sequoias athletes to improve marks against high-level competition as they prepare for conference championships.
