COS Women’s Soccer Rallys Past Reedley with Second-Half Goals from Laird & San Juan

REEDLEY, Calif. – College of the Sequoias women's soccer continued its conference push on Friday night with a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Reedley, scoring twice in the second half to earn a huge road win in Central Valley Conference play.

The Giants (3-4-1, 2-1 CVC) fell behind early in the 16th minute, when Reedley's L. Azevedo capitalized on a through ball to put the Tigers up 1-0. But after regrouping at the break, the Giants wasted no time flipping the script.

In the 48th minute, Jaya Laird (Hanford HS) connected on the equalizer, finishing off a perfectly placed ball from Ashley Rodríguez (Porterville HS) to level the score at 1-1. Just four minutes later, Alize San Juan (Golden West HS) delivered the eventual game-winner with an unassisted strike that slipped past the keeper to give the Giants a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.

"It was a gutsy performance," said COS Head Coach Brooklyn Morris. "We didn't have our best first half, but we came out in the second half with purpose. Jaya and Alize stepped up in big moments, and I'm proud of how we stayed locked in as a team from that point on."

Goalkeeper Haylie Brasil (Manteca HS) made eight first-half saves to keep COS within striking distance, before Madison Lujan (Hanford HS) took over in the second half, turning away four shots and helping secure the result. The Giants backline held strong despite 17 total shots from Reedley, and COS ended the night with 14 shots of their own, including eight after halftime.

"We were under pressure, but our defense kept us in it," Morris added. "That's the kind of game that shows how far we've come as a group. We're building confidence, and the energy from this win will carry into this week."

The Giants will first host Taft College on Friday, October 3 at 12:00 p.m. as the Men's will host Clovis at 3:00 p.m. Their homestand will continue on Tuesday, October 7, when they host Madera at 2:00 p.m., and take on Porterville College on Friday, October 10 at 12:00 p.m.
