No. 3 Sequoias Drops Season Debut to No. 2 Fullerton

VISALIA, Calif. – The season opener didn't go as planned for No. 3 College of the Sequoias (0-1), as the Giants fell 77-53 at home to No. 2 Fullerton in a top-3 matchup Saturday afternoon at Porter Field House.

A poor shooting day and turnover woes plagued the Giants, as they were outscored 42-21 in the first half. Fullerton's defense forced COS into 17 turnovers and a 34.9% shooting night, including just 5-of-16 from beyond the arc. The Hornets, meanwhile, shot 56.3% from the field and 47.4% from three, putting consistent pressure on the Giants' defense.

Head Coach Dallas Jensen stated that he needed his team to respond. "This was the kind of challenge we needed early in the year," Jensen said. "It's a great test against an Elite Eight contender. I thought Fullerton set the tone, and we didn't fully match it. But these are the games that make you better."

Despite the early hole, COS showed flashes in the second half, trimming the margin to 9, behind key bench contributions. Still, the gap proved too much to close.

"There's going to be growing pains," Jensen added. "This is a new group. We'll own it, learn from it, and grow. It's a long season, and I believe in this team."

Notable Performances

Kareem Barnett (Florida) led the Giants with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while adding three steals and two assists in 26 minutes.

Jayden Abuyen (Centennial HS) provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, including 2-of-3 from three-point range.

Cameron Kelly (Georgia) filled the stat sheet with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals in a team-high 36 minutes.

Mason Dorsey (Los Angeles) contributed 8 points 2 assists, and 2 steals.

Andre Stinson (New York) and Javon Bragg (Corcoran HS) combined for 13 rebounds, including a combined 5 offensive rebounds, helping COS stay even with Fullerton on the glass.

Upcoming Games

The Giants return to action on Friday, November 7, when they travel to San Luis Obispo for the Hinson's Tire Pros Winter Classic, held at Cuesta College. They will face Allan Hancock College on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and Cuesta College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
