No. 11 COS Softball Split CVC Doubleheader at Fresno
FRESNO, Calif. – The state ranked No. 11 College of the Sequoias softball team (14-4-1, 2-1) split a Central Valley Conference doubleheader on the road Tuesday against Fresno City College (10-7, 2-1). The Giants dropped a tight 1-0 decision in the opener before bouncing back with a 3-1 victory in Game 2 to move to 14-4-1 overall and 2-1 in CVC play.
Game 1: Fresno City 1, Sequoias 0
Game one turned into a pitcher's duel between Audrina Rodriguez (Woodlake HS) and Fresno's Sara Barbosa. Rodriguez delivered a strong outing for the Giants, striking out nine batters and allowing just one run on five hits across six innings.
Neither team broke through until the fifth inning. Fresno delivered a two-out single to center field that brought home the game's only run.
College of the Sequoias managed three hits in the game from Gabrielle Vasquez (Redwood HS), Mikayla Moreno (El Diamante HS) and Emilee Santos (Corcoran HS), but the Giants were unable to push a run across despite drawing two walks.
Rodriguez kept the Rams in check for most of the afternoon, but Fresno's pitching staff held COS off the board to secure the 1-0 win.
Game 2: Sequoias 3, Fresno City 1
The Giants responded in Game 2 with timely hitting and strong pitching to earn the split.
The Giants took the lead in the fourth inning when Alivea Salcedo (Tulare Western HS) delivered an RBI single to left field, scoring Shelby Somavia (Redwood HS) for a 1-0 advantage.
Fresno tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single, but COS answered in the seventh with the biggest swing of the day. Miyah Reeves (Coalinga HS) singled to left field to set up Madisyn Benedict (Hanford HS), who launched a two-run home run to left field to give the Giants a 3-1 lead.
Amanda Herrera (Immanuel HS) handled the bulk of the pitching duties, tossing six innings while allowing one run on eight hits and striking out three. Rodriguez returned to the circle in the seventh and closed the door to earn the save.
Reeves led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, while Benedict's late homer provided the decisive runs.
