COS Softball Split Sophomore Day Doubleheader with Taft
VISALIA, Calif. – College of the Sequoias softball celebrated Sophomore Day on Tuesday, splitting a Central Valley Conference doubleheader with Taft College. The Giants powered their way to a 12-4 run-rule win in the opener before falling 6-4 in the nightcap. COS now stands at 26-8-1 overall and 12-3 in CVC play.
Game 1: Sequoias 12, Taft 4 (6 innings)
The Giants broke things open early, erupting for five runs in the second inning to take control. Miyah Reeves (Coalinga HS) drove in a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, followed by an RBI walk from Emilee Santos (Corcoran HS). The big blow came from Gabrielle Vasquez (Redwood HS), who lined a bases-clearing double to center field to give COS a 5-0 lead.
Taft answered with three runs in the third, but the Giants continued to apply pressure. The Giants added another run in the third and then put the game away with a six-run sixth inning.
In the final frame, COS capitalized with aggressive baserunning and Taft's miscues. Reeves added an RBI, Vasquez and Yarelli Rocha (Arvin HS) drove in runs, and multiple runs crossed on errors as the Giants extended the lead to 12-4.
Audrina Rodriguez (Woodlake HS) earned the win, tossing three innings before Amanda Herrera (Immanuel HS) came on in relief to close it out.
Offensively, Vasquez led the way with four RBIs, while Shelby Somavia (Redwood HS) went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. The Giants drew eight walks and stole multiple bases to keep constant pressure on Taft.
Game 2: Taft 6, Sequoias 4
Game 2 proved to be a back-and-forth battle. COS struck first in the second inning when Rashelle VerSteeg (Mt. Whitney HS) singled up the middle to score Rocha and give COS a 1-0 lead.
Taft responded in the third to tie the game, then broke it open in the fifth with three runs, highlighted by a two-run double and an RBI double to take a 4-1 lead.
The Giants answered in the sixth inning as Vasquez tripled to right-center to score Santos, and Madisyn Benedict (Hanford HS) followed with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 4-3.
However, Taft added two runs in the seventh, and while COS got one back on an RBI double from Andreya Mendoza (Fowler HS) in the bottom half, the Giants could not complete the comeback.
