COS Women’s Tennis Shines at Modesto Tournament
MODESTO, Calif. – College of the Sequoias women's tennis team delivered an impressive showing at the Modesto Junior College Tournament held February 6-7, with multiple players performing well in both singles and doubles brackets. Competing against strong programs from across the state, the Giants demonstrated growth and great chemistry.
Freshman Areli Tobon (Mt. Whitney HS) powered through the Flight 5 singles bracket, earning a championship medal after defeating a Fresno City College opponent 6-0, 6-1 in the finals. Devony Allen (Mt. Whitney HS) also reached a final, claiming runner-up in Flight 6 after a tough 2-6, 2-6 loss to a student-athlete from Sierra College.
In the Flight 1 singles consolation bracket, sophomore Sadie Avila (Hanford HS) fought her way to the title with a determined 6-4, 7-5 win over Modesto. Avila also teamed up with Tobon in doubles, and the pair reached the semifinals before falling to the No. 1-seeded team from Sierra.
In doubles, sophomore Mia Orosco (Dinuba HS) and sophomore Jylean Cervantes (Tulare Union HS) battled back in the Flight 3 final to win 4-6, 6-1, (10-5) over Sierra, capturing a tournament championship and medals.
"Our coaching staff was very pleased with how our ladies competed in both singles and doubles," said head coach Martin Herrera. "We were especially proud of how they tried different strategies and kept fighting. That kind of mindset will help us grow throughout this season."
Looking Ahead
The Giants will begin Central Valley Conference play next week, when they will travel to Fresno City on Tuesday, Februray 17 at 1:00 p.m. They will then travel to non-conference opponent, Antelope Valley College on Saturday, February 21 at 1:00 p.m.
