COS Women's Tennis Sweep Porterville, Defeat a Tough Modesto on the Road 6-3
VISALIA, Calif. – The College of the Sequoias women's tennis team earned a Central Valley Conference win at home before facing a tough Modesto Junior College squad on the road the following day. The Giants swept Porterville College 9-0 on March 3 before beating Modesto on the road, 6-3.
COS 9 – Porterville 0 (March 3)
The Giants started strong against Porterville, taking all three doubles matches to build early momentum.
At No. 1 doubles, Jaden Godoy (Dinuba HS) and Devony Allen (Mt. Whitney HS) rallied from a 2-4 deficit to defeat J. Marron and M. Carranza 8-6.
"Jaden and Devony had to make some adjustments early," said head coach Martin Herrera. "They stayed patient in the rallies and that helped them come back to earn the win."
The teams of Sadie Avila (Hanford HS) and Areli Tobon (Mt. Whitney HS) and Mia Orosco (Dinuba HS) with Jylean Cervantes (Tulare Union HS) followed with convincing victories to give COS a 3-0 advantage after doubles.
In singles play, the Giants controlled every court. Godoy, Avila, Orosco, Tobon, Allen, and Cervantes all earned straight-set victories to complete the 9-0 team sweep.
Herrera highlighted Tobon's performance at No. 4 singles as a key moment.
"At four singles, Areli's solid ground strokes and timely drop shots helped her earn a 6-0, 6-0 win," Herrera said. "That kind of consistency helped push our team to the overall victory."
COS 6 – Modesto 3 (March 4)
On Wednesday, March 4, College of the Sequoias traveled to Modesto Junior College and earned a hard-fought 6-3 team victory over a strong Modesto team. The Pirates took two of the three doubles matches, but the duo of Mia Orosco (Dinuba HS) and Jylean Cervantes (Tulare Union HS) kept the Giants within striking distance with an 8-8 (7-3) tiebreak win at No. 3 doubles. The pair used solid net play and timely slices to keep their opponents off balance.
Trailing 1-2 after doubles, the COS coaching staff encouraged the players to adjust their strategy to account for the windy conditions.
"Our coaches told the players to rely more on their slice shots," said head coach Martin Herrera. "It proved to be the difference as we moved into singles play."
The adjustment paid off as the Giants won five of the six singles matches to secure the comeback victory. Orosco highlighted the singles lineup at No. 2 with a long three-set battle, defeating M. Mejia 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. After the match, Orosco said the encouragement from her teammates helped her stay focused and push through the demanding match.
COS also received singles wins from Sadie Avila (Hanford HS), Areli Tobon (Mt. Whitney HS), Devony Allen (Mt. Whitney HS), and Cervantes, completing the comeback and sealing the 6-3 team win for the Giants.

College of the Sequoias will continue Central Valley Conference play this week as they return to the court. The Giants will host Fresno City College on Friday, March 6 at the COS Tennis Complex at 1:00 p.m., before traveling to Clovis College next Friday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m.
