Sequoias Women's Tennis Compete Strong at CVC Tournament, Advance Multiple to Ojai
PORTERVILLE, Calif. – College of the Sequoias women's tennis team competed in the Central Valley Conference (CVC) Tournament, with multiple athletes advancing through singles and doubles draws to qualify for the 3C2A Individual State Championships in Ojai, which begins late April.
The three-day tournament featured individual bracket play, with COS players competing across both singles and doubles against top competition from across the conference.
Singles & Doubles Recap
COS saw strong performances across the bracket, highlighted by multiple deep runs in singles.
Sadie Avila (Hanford HS) advanced to the semifinals, opening with wins over Bird (Clovis) 6-1, 6-0, Wong (Fresno) 6-2, 6-4, and Carpenter (Fresno) 6-2, 6-0 before falling in a close match to Jimenez (Fresno), 7-6 (9-7), 6-3.
Jaden Godoy (Dinuba HS) also advanced through multiple rounds, defeating Porterville's Irland (6-1, 6-2) and Clovis' Salahikan (6-1, 6-2) before defeating teammate Areli Tobon (Mt. Whitney HS) 6-2, 6-2. Tobon opened her tournament with a 6-2, def. win over Garcia (Porterville).
Ruby Zambrano (Dinuba HS) earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Camacho (Reedley), while Jylean Cervantes (Tulare Union HS) also advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Andrade (Porterville).
In doubles play, all three COS teams advanced deep into the bracket. The team of Mia Orosco (Dinuba HS) and Cervantes opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Clovis' Ramirez/Kiang, before falling in a tight three-set match to Fresno's Jimenez/Carpenter, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
Godoy and Devony Allen (Mt. Whitney HS) advanced with wins over Porterville's Carranza/Carranza (6-0, 6-2) and Clovis' Smith/Samansky (5-7, 7-6, 6-1) before falling to Fresno in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
The duo of Avila and Tobon received a first-round bye before earning wins over Reedley's Perez/Torres (6-0, 6-0) and Fresno's Wong/Van Oosten (6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-2) to reach the semifinals, where they fell to Fresno's Jimenez/Carpenter (6-4, 6-2).
"Our women competed very well throughout the tournament," Herrera said. "We emphasized staying disciplined with our game plans, and our players did a great job adjusting and battling through long matches."
Looking Ahead to Postseason Play
With their performances, several COS players secured qualification for the 3C2A Individual State Championships in Ojai.
The women will be represented in singles by Avila, Godoy, Zambrano, and Tobon, while all three doubles teams—Orosco/Cervantes, Godoy/Allen, and Avila/Tobon—qualified.
The Giants now await playoff seeding for the 3C2A Team Championships, which begin Tuesday, April 7. The 3C2A Individual State Championships in Ojai are scheduled to begin Thursday, April 23.
