COS Sports Notes: Week of November 3, 2025
With postseason implications in football and cross country, conference momentum in volleyball and soccer, and the season debut for equestrian, College of the Sequoias teams are surging into November on multiple fronts.
From the gridiron to the trail, and from the hardwood to equine, College of the Sequoias Athletics enters a pivotal weekend loaded with championship chases, home finales, and early-season tests across multiple sports.
Football
College of the Sequoias' football team has a chance to claim a share of a conference title for the first time since 1998.
The Giants, 7-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play, host Modesto Saturday at 1 p.m. in Sequoias Stadium in their final regular season game.
Despite losing a heartbreaker to Fresno last week, the Giants can tie Modesto for the Valley Conference title with a victory. Fresno (3-1) can make it a three-way tie if they defeat Reedley.
In the latest state rankings, Modesto is No. 12 in the state and fifth in Northern California. Sequoias is 14th in the state and sixth in NorCal.
At stake are berths in the Northern California playoffs, which begin November 22.
Volleyball
COS plays at Taft Wednesday night and hosts Porterville Friday at 7 p.m. in the Porter Field House.
The Giants, 20-8 overall and 4-1 in conference matches, are currently ranked 19th in the state and seventh in NorCal. Taft, who dealt the Giants their conference loss, is ranked fifth in the state and third in NorCal.
Cross Country
Both COS teams will compete in the Northern California meet Friday at Fresno's Woodward Park.
Running on the same course at last week's conference meet, the COS women claimed the CVC title while the men's team was second.
Sophomore Arianna Ramirez-Romero was the individual CVC champion out of a field of 28 runners. Gia Ortega placed fifth and Elizabeth Urquilla was sixth.
The men were led by Julian Valdivia's second place finish out of 38 runners. Ryan Herrera finished sixth and Marcos Soltero was 12th.
Soccer
The Giant men's team won its first conference match by beating Lemoore 2-1 on Tuesday, and will be at Merced Friday. COS is 1-4-2 in conference matches and 3-9-6 for the season.
The women were at Taft Tuesday and will play Friday at Madera. Going into the week Sequoias was 6-4-2 in conference matches and 7-7-3 for the season.
Equestrian
COS will have its first competition of the year this weekend, hosting its own invitational at the Tulare campus Saturday and Sunday.
Colleges entered include Reedley, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Davis, among others.
Starting time is 11 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday.
Basketball
Both Giant teams will be on the road this weekend. The women's team travels to Rio Hondo, to face the Roadrunners on Friday and Glendale Saturday. Facing three of the state's top teams last weekend at the Mt. San Antonio Tipoff Classic, COS went 0-3.
The men's team travels to the coast, to face Allan Hancock Friday and Cuesta Saturday. COS dropped its season opener to defending state runner-up Fullerton last Saturday.
