COS Sports Notes: Week of April 20, 2026
College of the Sequoias' baseball and softball teams close out their regular seasons this week, with softball gearing up for the Northern California playoffs and the baseball team trying to secure a berth.
BASEBALL
COS had a setback last week, losing three conference games after fashioning a nine-game winning streak.
The Giants will host Coalinga College Monday at 2 p.m. Tuesday's game versus Porterville College has been rescheduled to Wednesday, April 22 at 2:00 p.m., due to inclement weather. The regular season closes Friday at Merced.
Sequoias is 19-18 overall and 13-8 in conference play. Both records are the best in the last three seasons.
With its strength of schedule, COS is likely to qualify for the NorCal regionals by winning one game this week, and would appear to be a lock if they could win two.
In the last state rankings poll, Sequoias was ranked 28th in the state and No. 15 in NorCal. Regional play begins next weekend.
SOFTBALL
The Giant softball team won two of three games last week but dropped out of first place, as Fresno ended the season with a nine-game winning streak to win the conference title with a 16-2 record.
Sequoias has a doubleheader at Porterville Tuesday, but at 13-3 in the conference the best they can do is second place. Overall COS is 27-8-1.
In the latest state poll, COS dropped to No. 11 in the state and fifth in Northern California.
Regionals will begin next weekend, and Sequoias is expected to be seeded high enough to host in the first round.
TENNIS
The COS women's tennis team had a great victory on the road, upsetting No. 2 seeded American River 6-3 on the road to reach the NorCal team finals. Playing at top-seeded Sierra, the Giants fell 5-0 in the finals to finish the year at 12-3.
The tennis teams compete in the state tournament beginning Thursday at Ojai.
The women's team will be represented by Sadie Avila, Jaden Godoy, Ruby Zambrano and Areli Tobon in singles, and the doubles teams of Jylean Cervvantes-Mia Orosco, Godoy-Devony Allen and Avila-Tobon.
