COS Sports Notes: Week of February 23, 2026
College of the Sequoias' basketball teams have earned home games in the Northern California regional playoffs, which begin Wednesday.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The COS men, co-champions with Columbia and 22-6 overall, will host No. 22 seed San Joaquin Delta College (13-14) Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Porter Fieldhouse. The Giants were seeded 11th.
Sequoias finished the regular season with a seven-game winning streak.
The winner travels to No. 6 Yuba (21-7) Saturday night in the second round.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The COS women, 17-11 overall and winners of eight in a row, drew the No. 8 seed and have a bye on Wednesday.
Sequoias will host the winner of No.24 Merritt (16-11) vs. No. 9 Sierra (19-9), Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the second round.
The winner will play at No. 1 seeded San Joaquin Delta March 7 in the regional finals.
SOFTBALL
It will be a busy week for the COS softball team, with five games scheduled.
Sequoias will resume a doubleheader against Bakersfield, at home Tuesday at noon. Play was suspended in the third inning last week because of rain.
Thursday, COS will open conference play by hosting Merced in a 2 o'clock single game.
Saturday, the Giants will face San Mateo and Siskiyous in single games at San Mateo.
The Giants are currently 10-1-1 overall, and ranked 10th in the state and fifth in Northern California.
BASEBALL
The Giant baseball team entered conference play with a 3-7 record, but turned the tables and beat Taft two out of three last week, including back-to-back wins Saturday and Sunday in which closer Chance Jasso got two saves.
Sequoias, now 5-8 overall, plays Fresno City College in a three-game series this week.
The Rams, 14-0 and ranked No. 2 in the state, will host games Tuesday and Saturday. Thursday's game will be at Sequoias in a 2 p.m. start.
TRACK
The Giant track teams will compete in the Beaver Invitational at American River College in Sacramento Saturday.
At last weekend's Sunbird Invitational meet in Fresno, the 4 x 100 relay team clocked a 41.19 first place finish, beating several four-year schools. The team is Chase Dexter, Tevin Howerton, Josiah Moon, and Tre'shawn Rimmer.
Other top performances included Mattis Aguilar, first in the high jump at 6-4; Richard Crakes, first in the 400 hurdles, and Ashlyn Reed and Sadie Carpenter, second and third in the triple jump.
TENNIS
The Giant tennis teams open conference play this week, hosting Clovis Tuesday at 1 o'clock and playing at Reedley Friday.
Sequoias' men are 4-0 in dual matches while the women are 2-1.
SWIMMING
The COS swim teams will compete in the Mt. San Antonio Invitational meet, Friday and Saturday, in Walnut.
